History

It is in 1750 that the first winegrower named HERTZ appeared on the marriage register in Eguisheim.

Léon HERTZ (1888-1967) was the first in line to make winegrowing his sole trade, as previous generations had always had several trades (his father was both a winegrower and a train driver).
Léon HERTZ (Pierre’s father) began his activity in 1913, and was the first owner of the cellar.

Pierre HERTZ (1923-1998), Bruno’s father, took over the cellar in 1947, when he returned from World War II. He bet on the future by mechanizing winegrowing. He invested in a caterpillar tractor in 1948 and was the first to acquire a diesel tractor in Eguisheim.

bruno.jpg Bruno HERTZ (Caroline’s uncle) studied oenology in Dijon and obtained his “Diplôme National d’Oenologie” qualification in 1976. He took over the cellar in 1979 and improved the quality of the wine. The same year, he bought the Rangen vineyard in Thann, at a time when nobody wanted to work there. As he loved history and old stone, in 1996 he became one of the founding members of the SICA, which manages the historical cellar of “Les Hospices de Strasbourg”.

In 2002, he became President of the “Cave Historique des Hospices de Strasbourg”.

caroline.jpgCaroline KIEFFER joined the family cellar in 1998, having obtained a qualification in biology in Dijon. After some months, she specialized in winegrowing and oenology.

In 2005, Bruno and Caroline became business partners and set up “SCEA Bruno HERTZ”.

In 2006 after many months of work, they opened the XVIth Century cellar. At present, work is being carried out on a cellar just above the old cellar where Eguisheim tasting sessions will soon be organized. They hope to welcome customers in the course of 2008.
